Forwoard collision & Lane departure warning system - Radar System-RD-140

Description
AWACS Ltd., which markets collision warning systems to prevent accidents, recently launched the Radar-RD-140 system that combines radar and a camera, mounted at the front of the vehicle. Any time a dangerous situation arises, the system will alert the driver to extricate himself from the dangerous situation to avoid an accident. If the driver does not maintain distance from the vehicle in front, the system will alert him. If the vehicle ahead suddenly brakes, the system will notify the driver. If the driver veers dangerously out of his lane, the system will alert him.

The system contains a computer and image processing software, a warning monitor and speakers. The radar measures and tracks the vehicles moving on the road (large and medium-sized vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles) or other objects, and calculates the distance between them and the vehicle in which it is installed. By examining the ratio of the speed of travel and the location of the vehicle in the lane, the time to impact is calculated. The information for the driver is displayed on a monitor mounted on the dashboard. The system can identify a vehicle, motorcycle, or bicycle at a distance of 140 meters or more in any visibility and weather conditions (complete darkness, cloudy, strong rain and fog). The system is produced by SDS.

The warnings are given both visually and by sound. For example, in the event of an imminent collision, a visual warning is given by changing the objects from green, to orange to red, depending on the level of the risk of hitting the vehicle ahead. Simultaneously, a warning sound is emitted – an intermittent beeping on a  special frequency, which also permeates noises in the driver’s surroundings (radio, people’s voices, etc).

Technical
  • Radar to detect objects in front of the vehicle.
  • A camera that detects deviations from the lane..
  • The brain of the system that gathers the data from the sensors, processes the information and implements the warning as required.
  • A display unit and keyboard to indicate the warnings and to enter data by the user.
  • A speaker for the alarm sounds.

Results
1
Identifying the risk of hitting a vehicle in front that brakes suddenly and sounding an immediate warning, at any speed.
1.5 seconds or more to impact (up to 5 seconds, according to speed).
10
Optimal. At the end of the braking action, the distance between the vehicles is over one meter.
2
Identifying the risk of hitting a vehicle in front that is gradually slowing while braking moderately and sounding an immediate warning. Identifying the risk of hitting a two-wheeled vehicle of any kind - a motorcycle or a bicycle.
1.5 seconds or more to impact (up to 5 seconds, according to speed).
10
Optimal. all warnings were given within the determined time.
3
Identifying the risk of hitting a two-wheeled vehicle of any kind - a motorcycle or a bicycle.
1.5 seconds or more to impact (up to 5 seconds, according to speed).
10
Optimal. all warnings were given within the determined time.
4
The identification distance included all objects moving in front and in our lane, in a 500 meter radius.
At least 80 meters.
10
Optimal. Identification recorded in our lane in every test.
5
The identification distance included all objects moving in front and in our lane, in a 250 meter radius.
At least 40 meters.
10
Optimal. Identification recorded in our lane in every test.
6
The identification distance included all objects moving in front and in our lane, in a 125 meter radius.
At least 20 meters.
10
Good. Identification recorded in our lane 8/10..
7
Refraining from sounding false alerts at speeds of over 30 kph.
False identification of various objects, vehicles cutting in and moving away.
During two hours of driving
Optimal. No false alerts.
8
Refraining from sounding false alerts at speeds below 30 kph.
False identification of various objects, vehicles cutting in and moving away.
During two hours of driving
Very good. Two false alerts were sounded for every two hours of driving.
9
Identifying deviation from the lane at speeds of over 60 kph and from the marked route.
Sounding a warning for deviating from the lane (in lanes of up to 4.7 meters wide)
10 to the right, 10 to the left
Optimal. All warnings were sounded according to the number of the tests (in a test on a rainy night, only 5/10 warnings were given).
10
Implementing special, clear sound alerts for each type of warning.
Permeates background noises - driving, loud music, hands-free phone speaker.

During two hours of driving
Optimal.
11
Providing a clear visual indication for every type of warning.
Providing the driver with the visual information immediately and clearly. Maintaining distance, collision warning and lane deviation warning.
During two hours of driving
Optimal.
All the tests were conducted in daylight, twilight, night and dawn light, and in all weather conditions – clear, rainy, hail, fog, low sunlight and haziness.
